What you'll learn
Each question helps you build key knowledge and skills.
- 1A computer system is made of hardware, which is the physical parts you can touch, and software, which is the programs and instructions that tell the hardware what to do.
- 2The central processing unit, or CPU, is the part of the computer that carries out instructions, using components such as the arithmetic logic unit, the control unit and registers.
- 3The CPU repeats a cycle called fetch decode execute, where it fetches an instruction from memory, works out what it means, and then carries it out.
- 4Computers use RAM to hold programs and data that are currently in use, and ROM to hold permanent instructions needed when the computer starts up.
- 5Secondary storage such as hard disks, solid state drives and USB sticks keeps data safely even when the power is turned off, and embedded systems are small computers built into everyday devices to do one specific job.
